Sesc Barra

The project to implement a high school, modeled after the American high schools where students and teachers live together in a campus environment, was the subject of a competition promoted by SESC Nacional in February, 2004. Designed for 500 students, ages 14 to 17, selected from around the country, the school is being built on a 130.000m2 lot in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. In addition to classrooms and student and teacher residencies, the school also includes numerous other communal facilities, such as a restaurant, library, administration building, amphitheatre, sports complex and a 600-seat theatre. The campus is built around a lake with plenty of internal peripheral roads and bike paths. Environmental concerns played an important part in designing the landscaping and infrastructure projects, which include features such as green roofs, a vacuum sewage system and water recycling system.
